Scholarships

Besides the three scholarships you see listed below, the selection of two delegates and two alternates to attend the Boys Nation program is also part of the Texas Boys State scholarship and awards program.

Note: There is no application process for Boys Nation, as the chosen Boys Nation “Senators” are based upon exceptional performance during the week of Texas Boys State, and both the selected Senators and alternates are announced at the Closing Ceremony on the final day of the program.

F.C. “Mac” McConnell American Legion Boys State Scholarship

F.C. “Mac” McConnell was a central figure in the establishment and early growth of the Boys State program in Texas.  Each year, senior Boys State staff select a top performing Boys Stater to receive a scholarship. One award is given and the size of the award is dependent upon the amount of income derived from the fund.

Note: There is no application process for this scholarship, as it is based upon outstanding performance during the week of Boys State, and the recipient is announced at the Closing Ceremony on the final day of the program.

Samsung American Legion Scholarship

Statesmen who apply for admission to colleges and universities should consider a Samsung American Legion Scholarship that is restricted to high school juniors who complete a Boys State program.  Additional scholarship information can be found at https://www.legion.org/scholarships/samsung.

Statesmen that meet all eligibility requirements described will complete the scholarship application form on the website – there is no written application nor will a paper copy be accepted our staff. Once you complete the application online, your submission is complete.

Note: Scoring takes place via an algorithm and application review, and we will announce the winner for the State of Texas at our Closing Ceremony on the final day of the program. There is only 1 winner from the State of Texas and then 1 subsequent national winner from all of the states, so understand this is a highly selective process.  You should also be aware that the winner of the scholarship is almost always a direct descendant of a Korean War Veteran, as scoring is enhanced by this fact in the criteria set up by the Samsung Corporation.

Senior Counselor Memorial Scholarship

Members of the all-volunteer Boys State staff decided in the early 2000s to establish a scholarship fund in memory of Boys State counselors who had passed away after more than a decade of service to the program.  Each year, senior Boys State staff select top performing Boys Staters to receive a scholarship. The size and number of scholarships awarded each year is dependent upon the amount of income derived from the fund, and senior counselors continue to make sizable donations to the scholarship program to increase its impact.

Note: There is no application process for this scholarship, as it is based upon outstanding performance during the week of Texas Boys State, and the recipient is announced at the Closing Ceremony on the final day of the program.
